Rose Bowl is an outdoor athletic stadium located in Pasadena, California, United States, in the Los Angeles County. The stadium is the place of the yearly college football bowl game, the Rose Bowl, held on the New Year’s Day. In the year 1982, the rose bowl stadium had became the home field of the UCLA Bruins college football team. It has hosted events during the olympics held on 1932 and 1984 and was also the venue for the the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final and also for the 1994 FIFA World Cup Final.

The natural grass playing arena runs in a north to south configuration and sits at an height of 251 m (825 feet) above the sea level. The stadium is a National historical Landmark. Its design was based upon Yale Bowl which is located in New Haven, Connecticut.

The game is now known as the Rose Bowl Game and it was played at the Tournament Park until the year 1922. The Pasadena Tournament of the Roses Association, the Rose Bowl game’s organizer, realized that temporary stands were unequal for a crowd of more than 40,000 people and assayed to build a improved and permanent stadium.

The stadium was contrived by the architect Mr. Myron Hunt in the year 1921.Mr. Myron design was charmed by Yale Bowl in the New Haven, Connecticut, was built in the year 1914. The Arroyo Seco dry river bottom was selected as the emplacement for the stadium. The Rose Bowl was under construction from the year 1921 to 1922.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum which was nearby it was also under construction during that time and it would be completed in May 1923 shortly before tThe Rose Bowl stadium was completed. The 1st game was a regular season contest held on October 28, 1922 when Cal defeated the USC 12–0.

Rashard Jamal Mendenhall was born on 19th June, 1987, he is an American football who plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Steelers 23rd overall in the year 2008 NFL (National Football League) Draft. He played college football at the Illinois.

Rashard attended Niles West High School and Lincoln Jr. High School at Skokie in Illinois .As a 5-star prospect, he was also rated as the No. 1 recruit in the state of Illinois by Scout.com. He had recorded 1,300 yards and 21 touchdowns as a sophomore. As a junior, he rushed for 1,832 yards and 19 touchdowns, while maintaining an average of 11.6 yards per carry. In his last year, he averaged 9.1 yards per carry, rushing for 1,453 yards on his 160 attempts and 14 touchdowns. Following his good career in the high school level, Rashard played in the 2005 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Rashard Mendenhall was drafted 23rd overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the year 2008 NFL Draft.Prior to his rookie season R Mendenhall was ranked as the 30th best running back in the league by ESPN. On 25th July, 2008, Mendenhall agreed to a 5-year contract worth US$12.55 million with the Steelers, of which $7.125 million is guaranteed. He was expected to be a compliment to Pro-Bowl running back Willie Parker, in addition to the returning kicks. Mendenhall fumbled twice in Pittsburgh’s 3rd pre-season game against the Minnesota; they were attributed to adjusting to the faster pace of the National Football League. Days after the game, teammate Hines Ward placed a ball in Mendenhall’s locker with a note stating that, “Take Mendenhall’s ball away and get $100 from him.” Mendenhall was required to carry that ball everywhere he went until the team’s next game. Mendenhall fumbled once more in the Steelers final pre-season game, but worked with running backs coach Kirby Wilson to fix that problem.

The Green Bay Packers are an United States football team which is based

on Green Bay, Wisconsin. They are the members of the North Division of

the NFC (National Football Conference) in the NFL (National Football

League). The Green Bay Packers are the current champions of National

Football League. Green Bay is the second-oldest franchise in the

National Football League.

The Packers are the last shadow of “small town teams” that were once

common in the National Football League during the 1920′s and 1930′s.

The Green Bay Packers was founded on 11th August, 1919 by the former

high-school football rivals Mr. Earl “Curly” Lambeau and Mr. George

Whitney Calhoun.Lambeau supplicated funds for the uniforms from his

employer, the Indian Packing Company. He was given USD 500 for

equipment’s and uniforms, on the condition that the team be named for

its sponsor.

The Packers are the one and only non-profit, community-owned franchise

in United States professional sports major leagues.Usually, a team is

owned by a person, corporate entity or partnership i.e., a “team

owner.” The lack of a dominant owner has been declared as one of the

main reasons the Green Bay Packers have never been able to move from

the city of Green Bay, a city of only 1,02,313 people as of the census

taken in 2000.

They are members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the NHL (National Hockey League). They used to play their home games at Jobing.com Arena.

They were founded in 1972 as the Winnipeg Jets of the WHA (World Hockey Association), joining the National Hockey League in 1979 and moving to the Phoenix in the year 1996.US Airways Center was their home ice (then known as America West Arena) for 7 years until 2003, when Jobing.com Arena opened. On May 5, 2009, the Coyotes was filed for bankruptcy and the team is now owned by the NHL.

They began to play as the Winnipeg Jets, one of the founding franchises in the WHA (World Hockey Association). They were the most successful team in the short-lived WHA, they won the Avco World Trophy, the league’s championship trophy, for three times and making the finals five out of the WHA’s seven seasons. It then became one of the 4 teams admitted to the National Hockey League as part of a merger that saw the financially-struggling WHA fold in 1979.

In December 2008, the media came to know that the Phoenix Coyotes were losing money at a high rate and were being funded by the NHL directly. NHL president Gary Bettman and vice-president Bill Daly minimized the media reports, but secretly the NHL had taken over operations of the Coyotes.

On March 27, 2010, the Coyotes clinched a playoff spot, which was their first playoff spot since the 2001-2002 season, and in the process, reached the 100 point mark for the first time in franchise history.Their first round opponent in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs was the Detroit Red Wings.

Robin van Persie was born on 6 August 1983 in Rotterdam, Netherlands is a Dutch footballer. His mother, José Ras, was a painter, and his father, Bob, a sculptor. He has two sisters, Lilly and Kiki.He plays for Arsenal and the Dutch national team.Van Persie is highly regarded for his dribbling and shooting technique and is a youth product of Feyenoord, but he has become prone to injury.Van Persie has become as a pivotal figure for club and country and this was recognized after he got named as Arsenal Player of The Season for the 2008–09 season.

Before choosing his career as a professional footballer van Persie discovered that he was good at other sports such as Table Tennis and Darts.Van Persie’s 50th Premier League goal made him only the fourth Dutch footballer to reach 50 goals in England’s top division along with Dennis Bergkamp, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Van Persie has over 50 caps and has scored 19 goals for the Netherlands which made way for him to make his senior international debut in 2004.He has participated in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups and Euro 2008.Van Persie was a U-21 international player and took part in the 2004 and 2006 European Championship qualifying. Van Persie was used in a wider role as a left wing due to the taste of the experienced Ruud Van Nistelrooy in the striker role. The Jong Oranje failed to qualify for the 2004 tournament and van Persie did not participate in the latter as he was already in the senior squad for the mega event. He earned his first caps for the Netherlands national team in less than the span of a week, first in a 2–0 2006 World Cup qualifying win over Romania in the year 2005 and in another qualifier 4 days later against Finland, which saw him pick up his first international goal in a 4–0 victory.

Apple Cup

The Apple Cup is the annual college football between the two largest universities in Washington (United States), the University of Washington (UW) Huskies and the Washington State University (WSU) Cougars the first game between these two rivalry teams started from November 30, 1900. Before 1962, theteams played for the “Governor’s Trophy.”, it was renamed as the “Apple Cup” on 1962 because of Washington’s famous apple crop.

It is the traditional final game of the regular season and it will be held on the Saturday preceding Thanksgiving at Husky Stadium in Seattle during odd years, and WSU’s Martin Stadium in Pullman during even years, but with college football season extending, the game is often played at a later date.

From 1950–80 (except for 1954), the WSU home games in the series were played at Spokane’s Joe Albi Stadium. The WSU Cougars won three of these fifteen games in Spokane (1958, 1968, 1972), and have won six of the fourteen played at Martin Stadium (1982, 1988, 1992, 1994, 2004, 2008), the most recent clash between these two teams took place on December 4th, 2010.

Since 2007 the Apple Cup has been sponsored by Boeing, With the lengthening of the college football regular season schedule to 12 games in 2006, there was a movement to change the date of the Apple Cup from the weekend before Thanksgiving to the weekend following. For the first time, the 2007 edition of the Apple Cup was played two days after Thanksgiving.

The first rivalry game which was held on the November of 1900, resulted in a tie between UW and WSU. From 1900 to 2010, there have been 103 games took place between the schools. The Huskies hold a 66–31–6 advantage.
UW’s longest winning streak : 8 games (achieved twice from 1959–66 and from 1974–81).
WSU’s longest winning streak : 2 games (but the Cougars have won back-to-back games on eight separate occasions: (1929–30, 1953–54, 1957–58, 1967–68, 1972–73, 1982–83, 2004–05 and 2007–08).

Although Washington leads the overall Apple Cup series till date, the Cougars have taken four of the past seven meetings, which included a double-overtime win in 2008.

Washington currently holds the trophy for two straight years. In 2009, the Cougars lost by 30–0 at Husky Stadium. It was UW’s first shutout since 1964. In 103rd Apple Cup held on 4th December 2010, the Huskies defeated the Cougars by a score of 35-28.The 104th Apple Cup will be played at Qwest Field in Seattle on November 26, 2011 so that the UW can renovate Husky Stadium.

May be you have encountered and seen all the hype, excitement, anger, dismay, joy, hatred, criticism, optimism and other emotions that have surrounded the signing of Miami Heat’s star LeBron James for the NBA season 2010-2011. Was it a personal decision a business decision or mixture of both? Here I will tell you about the great story behind it and few lessons that can be learnt by all businessmen.

The basketball star was approached by many top franchises. It also included Cleveland Cavaliers, his home team, who wanted him desperately. Others were New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, Miami and Chicago Bulls. Whether it is sports or business, excellent talent is always in demand. Let me remind you here that professional sports like the basketball and football is a huge business for people. And so the recruitment of the players was breaking news. This interested the public to fulfill their interests not for days but for weeks in advance before the decision was carried out. A commercial was set up by the Radio City Music Hall Rockets that was sung by the politicians. Analysis by the financial analysts strongly asserted that he could be the first billionaire athlete if he signed the contract with them.

This announcement was actually an event. You can imagine the pressure that was incredible. ESPN started a show completely on LeBron. This could make things better or worse. In this show, LeBron could explain his decision to everyone on national TV. CNN provided the coverage also apart from other networks. Stakes are high and the stakeholders are in number, coverage is public and interests are large, so the emotion ran greater.

What was with ESPN? It actually needed visibility and to trade the ad time. LeBron stated that he did not require money and he said that he will donate the amount. ESPN is urging to increase their profile and the best way they can do it is by satisfying the great interest of the public. As a matter of fact there are more than 10 million viewers who see it. That includes me.

After the announcement, many individuals became disappointed. There was a fast reaction and it was powerful though. Owner of the Cavaliers, Dan Gilbert, gave a message very openly, disparaging and berating, LeBron with his decision, called him callous and heartless. Many unprofessional comments were made too.
