The Swedish and the international monetary award came into existence in the year 1895 and were christened as the Nobel Prize awards. The categories to which the awards were conferred include physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The noble aim of Alfred Nobel who bequeathed his riches to the Nobel Prize committee was to support and encourage young and deserving but poor men of art and science.
The Nobel Peace prize also conveys a social prestige that is unmatched in the echelons of greater men of science and arts. The selection process of the committee has always been under much criticism. The importance of the Nobel Prize increases as the selection process as well as the nomination process is very tough and this is why there is a great prestige encrusted with the award. There are separate committees appointed for each discipline and each one is responsible for selecting the nominees and the prize winner.
Elaborate preparations are made each year for the Nobel week in which the laureates are received with much grandeur. Throughout the duration of the week the prize winners are escorted on a magical odyssey through the marvelously decorated Swedish capital. The week culminates with the traditional royal dinner given by the king of Sweden to the prize winners.
Theodore Roosevelt was the first American to be conferred a Nobel Prize for his contributions to various peace treaties. Albert Einstein was perhaps the most notable of all the Nobel Prize winners whose reputation was brought to the fore by his startling and daring works in theoretical physics. It is always said that literature prizes are hard to come by as the prizes are awarded by assessing a life time of works and not just a single work!! Pearl s buck is one well known author, who was given this award.
