Who is John of God?

John of God was born on March 8, 1495 was a Portuguese born saint and friar, he was one of Spain’s leading religious figures.He was born in João Cidade in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal, into a once salient family that was indigent but had great religious trust. John of God’s mother died when he was only a kid and John’s father had joined a monastic order.

As an youngster, John had worked as a shepherd for a farmer who was very delighted with his persevering work and strength. He had an offer to marry the daughter of that farmer and to become the heir to the property, but he declined because he wanted to go after a spiritual life in the service of God.

John moved to Spain, where he served as a soldier under the Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and he also fought some battles. After many heroic feats, he worked in dispersing the religious books, using the recent transferable type printing press of the Johannes Gutenberg to render people with the Bible.

John og God went through a major religious transition on the Sebastian’s day i.e January 20, while hearing to a sermon by the Saint John of Avila, who was later to become his spiritual wise man and would encourage him in his quest to meliorate the life of the poor & downtrodden. John then went temporarily into what seemed to be a state of madness and was later on thrown into an insane asylum, where John recovered after a visit from the John of Ávila and understood that the poor and needy merited better treatment than he had incurred. He determined to dedicate the rest of his life to caring for the sick and the poor.He died at the age of 55 (March 8, 1550).
